This collection of work is a reflection of Holly’s journey and experiences
(both professional and personal) over the past year. It expresses the different influences and scenery she has encountered and how she has chosen to express them in oils. This work has been further enhanced, by attending courses at an Atelier in Edinburgh where she has been refining her skills in classical and traditional oil painting.
The collection comprises landscapes and urban scenes as the main subject matter. Growing up in New Zealand surrounded by natural beauty, has inspired
in Holly a passion for expressing sky and light on the canvas. This continues to influence her alongside Scottish and European historical architecture and scenery, which has brought to light new creative possibilities.
A key theme of this exhibition is the exploration of new places through the interplay of colour, light and sky. These aspects are used to capture the feel of a place as a whole as much as the subject matter. Broad expansive landscapes express the rugged wildness of Scotland, while snapshots of urban scenes hold the essence of a moment in time. The sky takes on a special significance and its vast and ever-changing nature is an inspiring subject matter for Holly’s work.
The landscapes featured in this collection use the sky as a backdrop to set the tone for the entire composition. The sky is not only an expanse of space, but also a window into the deeper emotions embodied in the landscape.
