Making connections through art

Kia Ora Koutou e nga Manuhiri. Nau mai, haere mai, haere mai. Hello and welcome to our gallery of emerging and established artists from Aotearoa New Zealand.

Today, Art by the Sea stands as a respected Auckland art gallery showcasing a wide variety of fine and affordable contemporary art from across Aotearoa New Zealand. The gallery is a business but it is also a communal space that draws in residents and travellers alike seeking a little time-out and inspiration away from the chaos of today. We are kaitiaki (guardians) of this space. And this space provides manaakitanga (respect, support, and hospitality) to all who visit it.

Hei kona mai. We look forward to welcoming you into our gallery.

Our Story

Art by the Sea was established in 1991 in the historic Duders building on the waterfront of the seaside suburb, Devonport. We would like to acknowledge the hard mahi of Bronwyn Davies who ran the gallery for its first ten years in business and established its integral connection with the Devonport community. The current owners, Mike and Linda Geers, purchased the business in 2001 and built it up to the reputable Auckland art gallery it is today. Following the move to Takapuna in 2021, Art by the Sea has established strong ties to the Takapuna and Milford communities. We are honoured by the support and welcome we have received.

We could (and may!) write a book with the stories that have travelled through or begun at Art by the Sea. There have been floods (in 2001 and during the infamous Auckland Floods 2023). There was the drunk driver who crashed their car through the front window. There have been practical jokes, such as the time we placed a giant sandstone kina on the beach by the ferry on April Fools’ Day, or a few years later when we precariously climbed the Edwards Parade clock tower to balance presents on top at Christmas. And there have been incredible community events—charity fundraisers for Amnesty International, War Child, the Key to Life Trust. On these nights, the gallery came alive as we witnessed poets and artists joining together in creative expression about human rights, children affected by war and conflict, and mental health awareness. The stories will continue...
