Tallulah Nunez (b, 1963, New Zealand) uses dizzying mark-making, vibrant colours, and shifting perspectives to make paintings that defy many of the existing conventions associated with the landscape genre. Natural motifs and patterned elements recur throughout Nunez’s pictures: snake-like trees, floating moons, distorted reflections in bodies of water, and stippled night skies appear in various permutations, synchronised with harder-to-define forms in which abstract and representational impulses co-exist in unorthodox harmony. 
Nunez’s process rarely involves reference images; instead, she transposes the psychological complexity of her interior world into lush and layered compositions.
She slowly applies layers of contrasting and complementary colours that simultaneously reference influential art movements like colour field painting and Post-Impressionism. As she engages with these open-ended experiments in image-making, Nunez depicts kaleidoscopic visions of flora and fauna in processes of constant evolution.

In her latest show - Sanctuary (September 4 to October 4, 2024)  Tallulah Nunez shares her vision of home as a sanctuary viewed from an open window or door looking out onto a peaceful garden or woodland refuge. These interior/exterior safe havens are places of relaxation, contemplation and rejuvenation. 
During the painting process Nunez, herself seeking sanctuary, withdraws from the external, often overwhelming outside demands both figuratively and mindfully. By disengaging and through dissociation she enters a safe zone of pure creativity where instinctively and meticulously she develops her paintings, one mark, one pattern, one line, leading to the next methodically, playfully, joyfully.
