Still Life in art refers to inanimate objects such as fruit, flowers, food and everyday items that are painted as the main focus of interest. Essentially anything that does not move (including deceased items) placed in a neutral setting and arranged in such a way to allow the interplay of light and shadow to draw attention to the objects in question. The term comes from the Dutch 'nog steed geliijk' meaning still even, which became current from about 1650 as a collective name for this type of subject matter.
